The approach to St Malo by Brittany Ferry from Portsmouth is spectacular, as
the town is situated on a headland at the mouth of the estuary of the Rance. It
has a completely preserved walled city, the Citadel, and it's easy to see how
this remained impregnable over the centuries. Inside the walls is a town in its
own right, with bustling narrow streets, shops, bars and restaurants. The lively
character of the place lessens the sombre effect of the grey granite with which
it's built. St Malo is an excellent base for exploring the nearby coast, Mont St
Michel, and Dinard.
