Auxerre is a busy commercial town in the north of Burgundy on the banks of
the Yonne. The centre is well-preserved, with a maze of attractive narrow
streets and ancient houses, dominated by three huge religious buildings, the
Abbey Saint-Germain, the cathedral Saint-Etienne and the church of Saint-Pierre.
The town also boasts a spectacular clock tower. There are plenty of bars and
restaurants, and a lively regional theatre. Auxerre is well situated close to
the A6 Autoroute, and with easy access to the famous wine-growing area around
Chablis.
