Caen is a large commercial port and industrial city, and although the centre
is reasonably pleasant for a night's stay, it's best seen as a convenient ferry
port for the Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth. In fact, the ferries actually
dock in Ouistreham, about 10 miles north of Caen. Efforts have been made to make
the centre tourist-friendly, and the new marina has helped. The centre is ringed
in parts with the remains of the old city walls, a reminder that this was
William the Conqueror's favourite city. If you're staying in Caen overnight,
there's no shortage of hotels and restaurants. The town is a good base for
exploring the rolling countryside of Calvados to the south.
