Holland is often thought of as just another name for the
Netherlands, whereas in fact it is just one of the Dutch provinces, albeit the
best known. Holland is further split into two, Zuid (South) Holland and Noord
(North) Holland. Taking these two provinces together we find the major cities of
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. These closely concentrated urban
areas are amongst the most densley populated in Europe.
Most people come to Holland to visit these cities, and perhaps
also the wonderfully preserved old town of Delft, with its pottery, or Gouda,
famous for its cheese. Amsterdam is the magnet for most visitors, and rightly
so. A buzzing, lively city, it offers something for everyone. It's certainly
much more than cafés for smoking dope and the red light district, having some of
the most elegant town houses anywhere, ranged along the canals, as well as world
class museums, concert halls and theatres. Rotterdam, although a great
industrial city and port, also boasts some astonishing modernist architecture,
as well as having a reputation as one of the best clubbing cities in Europe.
Holland is also famous for its bulb fields, especially the tulip
fields, and there are few sights so picturesque as field after field of tulips
in bloom among the windmills.
