Cherbourg is a large port and industrial city, and although the centre is
reasonably pleasant for a night's stay, it's best seen as a convenient ferry
port for the Brittany Ferries crossing from Poole. Efforts have been made to
make the centre tourist-friendly, and the new marina has helped. In the
pedestrianised streets to the west of the port you can find plenty of bars and
restaurants. The town is a good base for exploring the Cherbourg peninsula, with
it's seaside resorts and the beaches of the Normandy landings of World War Two.
