Colmar has a pretty old traffic-free centre with streets lined with
higgledy-piggledy half-timbered gabled houses on crooked lanes, typically
Alsatian extremely pretty and very touristy. Colmar is also the proud possessor
of one of the last and most extraordinary of all Gothic paintings the altarpiece
for St Anthony's monastery at Issenheim, painted by Mathias Grnewald. The town
