Metz, battled over since Roman times, has an interesting mixture of French
and Germanic influences. The cathedral has lovely stained glass, some of it
designed by Matisse. The spire is an amazingly delicate latice-work, which
hardly looks strong enough to stay in place. The second most impressive building
is the grand central Railway Station. There's plenty to do in the evening with
many good restaurants and cafes, and a network of pedestrianised streets.
