Le Mont St Michel is one of the most well-known landmarks in France. The
small town is overshadowed by the enormous monastery complex which climbs up the
slope of the small island. The whole thing is perfectly preserved, and the
hotels, bars and restaurants are in lovely medieval buildings. The view from the
top of the monastery church is stupendous. But be warned, during the peak
holiday season the place is heaving, every square inch, it seems, being given
over to attracting tourists and relieving them of their cash.
