Tips on how to use the route planner

- The "Toll costs" relate to motorway tolls, in this case French Autoroute
tolls, calculated by distance travelled, and includes tunnel charges if
appropriate. Ferry costs are not included.
- The "Road tax cost" relates to fixed charges for driving on motorways in
certain countries, in this case the windscreen sticker or "Vignette" you need
to purchase to drive on Swiss motorways. You can
buy your Swiss motorway vignette from the Swiss Centre online before you
leave the UK, or at border posts and garages near the borders. Austria has a
similar system, but no facility for advance purchase.
- "Petrol costs" are self-explanatory and are based on a Fiesta type petrol
car. If you want to change the petrol prices to reflect more accurately the
cost in different countries, visit our page for
petrol prices in Europe.
- "Total costs" are of course the sum of the above.
To make changes to some of the parameters used in the calculations,
click the "Change route" link as seen in the example above right. You can change
petrol to diesel, miles to kilometres, and the cost of fuel, as well as changing
the vehicle type.
The journey time shown assumes no stops and no hold-ups, so don't forget to
allow for these. Our advice is to add 10 minutes to every hour.
The map above the summary shows the route and some of the hotels en-route. A
single blue hotel icon means only one hotel in the locality. Hold your pointer
over the hotel and click "Details" to go to the hotel page. A little group of
red and blue hotel icons means more than one hotel, so click until you've zoomed
in enough to see the single blue icon which allows you to click the "Details"
link. IMPORTANT - when you have viewed the hotel details and wish to return to
the route, do so by rapidly double-clicking the Back button on your browser. The
"Back to search" link on the hotel page will not work in this instance. We are
working to fix this.
In the itinerary below the summary click "Display map" for a detailed map of
the particular area. Our hotels will be shown but these are not clickable
(yet!). To see the hotels click the link "+ details" which will produce a
clickable list of nearby hotels. IMPORTANT - when you have viewed the hotel
details and wish to return to the route, do so by double-clicking the Back
button on your browser. The "Back to search" link on the hotel page will not
work in this instance. We are working to fix this.
