Versailles is one of the great tourist attractions of the World. The enormous
and spectacular chateau was built by King Louis XIV, and is a testament to the
stature of kings at the time, seen as little short of god-like. The Baroque
nature of the chateau means it can all be rather overwhelming, but you can
always escape form the glittering splendour of the interior and stroll in the
beautiful gardens with their fountains, manicured lawns and topiary, or enjoy a
row on the lake in the extensive parklands. And it's just 45 minutes by metro to
the centre of Paris.
