France enjoys perhaps the most varied scenery of any European
country. Although roughly twice the size of the UK, the population is similar,
so, outside the major cities and peak holiday periods, traffic is relatively
light. There is an excellent network of mostly toll motorways, so getting around
by car is easy. So hire a car and find out what France has to offer.
The variety of country-side is one of France's great assets.
You'll find the majestic peaks of the Alps, including Europe's highest mountain,
Mont Blanc. As well as winter sports every tye of summer outdoor activity is
catered for. For more mountain scenery try the Pyrenées, separating France from
Spain, with excellent walking and mountain biking.
Or perhaps you'd prefer to laze on the beaches of the French
Riviera or test the surf on the bracing Atlantic coast. Brittany, easily
accessible from the UK, is perfect for just about every type of holiday, and
ideal for families. For lovers of rural landscapes and historic Chateaux there's
the Loire Valley, or for something different try the volcanic hills of the
Massif Central, or the wine trail among the rolling hills of Alsace-Lorraine.
Finally France is justly famed for its magnificent cities. The
charms of Paris are of course well known, but equally enticing are Lyon or
Strasbourg with their gastronomy or the lively southern port of Marseille, or
the great port city of Bordeaux, centre of the wine trade. And closer to home
there's cosmopolitan Lille, with some of the best fish restaurants in France.
