Spain remains a favourite holiday destination for the British,
and there's no better way to explore the variety and richness of this beautiful
country than by car. However the long journey down through France or the
prospect of a lengthy ferry journey means that many visitors choose to fly and
then hire a car at their destination. So make sure you check out the fantastic
deals on offer from our car hire partners.
There's so much to say about Spain that it is hard to know where
to start and where to stop. The country is split into three obvious geographical
sections. There's the northern provinces along the Atlantic coast, not
dissimilar to Cornwall or Brittany. This area is known as Green Spain, and some
Spain's greatest treasures are found here, from the gorgeous scenery of the
Picos de Europa mountains to the splendour of the ancient pilgrims' city of
Santiago de Compostella. Or there's the lively university city of Ovieto, and
the lovely beaches at places like Llanes and Ribadesella. To the east the mighty
Pyrenées form the border with France all the way across to the Mediterranean.
Next we have the Mediterranean coastline, which extends all the
way from the French border, past Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante and Malaga all
the way to Gibraltar. This where the famous Costas are to be found, still
immensley popular with holiday makers and ex-pats alike.
Finally there is Spain's vast hinterland, mostly consisting of a
high plateau, dry, very hot and dusty in Summer and cold and often wet in
Winter. In some ways this is where you will find the real Spain, where ancient
festivals are still celebrated and traditions die hard. This where the true
explorers will head, and they will be rewarded with spectacular landscapes and
some of Europe's finest ancient cities, such as Seville, Granada, Cordoba,
Salamanca and Zamora.
