 The
Netherlands is an excellent holiday destination, with particular appeal to families
and cyclists. It is a very safe country where people are courteous and helpful,
and many speak excellent English. It is easily reached from the UK, either by
direct ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, or from Hull to Ijmuiden,
which is just a short drive from Amsterdam.
Amsterdam itself needs no promotion. The city is home to some of the World's
best art galleries and museums, notably the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum.
Known as the Venice of the North, its canals are flanked by elegant old merchant
houses. And of course Amsterdam has a reputation for nightlife. Many other major
cities of the Netherlands are
 well
worth a visit, amongst them Rotterdam with its modernist architecture, the
capital, the Hague and Delft, home of the famous pottery.
There are a number of National Parks in the Netherlands, great for cycling
and family camping holidays, and if you can make it to Holland while the Tulips
are in full bloom, it is a sight not to be forgotten.
