Situated close to the Atlantic coast on the route down to Spain, Bordeaux makes for either a convenient stopover on the way South, or a base for a few days exploring the city and surrounding wine-growing region. The city centre, roughly bordered by Place Gambetta, the large Jardin Public and smaller Jardin de la Mairie to the West and the river Garonne to the East, has undergone serious regeneration in recent years and is now a bustling and vibrant area. The riverfront esplanade is also undergoing redevelopment with completed sections featuring parks, playgrounds and cycle paths. Combined with the plentiful public parks, greenery and pedestrian streets the centre has to offer it's easy to escape the traffic and hustle and bustle. For wine-lovers of course all this may prove incidental to the fact that Bordeaux lies within a 1000 square kilometre region of vineyards with over 5000 wine-producing properties. The tourist office runs tours from May to October, and you can even take a wine course at the Ecole du Vin.
