Perpignan Tourist information:
A useful stop off point close to the Spanish border, along with Barcelona, Perpignan is one of the major Catalan cities. It's a good base for visits to the coast or the mountainous interior (it lies at the foothills of the Pyrenees). The old town has been partially pedestrianised with the most notable buildings being on Place de la Loge where you can also see locals performing traditional Catalan folk dances on Sundays. The Palace of the Kings of Mallorca, dating from the days when Perpignan was the capital of the kingdom of Mallorca (which took in the area right up to Montpellier as well as the Balearic Islands themselves), is a short distance away in the Citadel. With its close links to Spain, fiestas are commonplace in Perpignan.
