International Driving Permits for UK residents

Applying for an an IDP

International Driving Permits are issued by the AA, RAC and Green Flag, and full information can be obtained by visiting these organisations websites.

Personal applications for IDPs can be made at selected Post Office branch offices. You must apply in person (this means that third party applications will not be accepted) and complete the application form available from the Post Office. You must produce one of the following original valid documents:

  • your UK driving licence (including paper counterpart if applicable)
  • your UK pass certificate (certificate of competence to drive)

This document must be accompanied by a recent passport-sized photograph signed on the back on normal thin photographic paper, together with some other acceptable signed proof of identity, e.g. passport.

The Post Office acts in this as an agent for the AA.
