Roussillon is the inland part of the region of Languedoc Roussillon. It comprises the Ardeche, together with the Cevennes and part of Auvergne, and is the perfect all-round destination for those looking for a genuine French experience, away from the crowds of the coast, and with some of the loveliest scenery France has to offer.
The countryside rises gradually through the vineyards of the Rhone valley until reaching the rugged and beautiful hills of the Monts du Vivarais and the Cevennes. From these hills numerous rivers flow towards the Rhone, creating spectacular gorges where kayaking and swimming are possible, surrounded by mighty cliffs. Small villages cling to the hillsides, retaining a real sense of France as it has been through the ages. The mighty Loire also rises here, flowing westwards on its long journey to the sea.
Camping holidays in the Ardeche offer a real taste of provincial France. The local wines are not expensive and complement the wholesome and excellent cuisine of the region. The daily trip to the boulangerie, boucherie and alimentaire means the produce is fresh and locally sourced. Just about every type of outdoor activity is possible, ranging from the water-based activities in the rivers and lakes to walking, mountain biking, horse riding, quad biking and paragliding. There's even a karting track at Aubenas-Lanas. Pot-holing is popular in the limestone cliffs and several companies offer expert guidance.
