Ski resort hotels in and around Garmisch Partenkirchen. |
The Bavarian Alps offer a very different skiing experience from their higher and wilder Austrian neighbours. Picturesque mountain villages nestle in wooded valleys, and the skiing and accommodation is less expensive than either Switzerland or Austria. The area around Garmisch Partenkirchen is perhaps best known, and the many villages are linked to each other by bus or lifts. But the area is best enjoyed with a car, allowing you to fully explore the delightful scenery. And it's easy to get to Austria.
There are lots of of little villages making up the Bavarian ski region, centred on Garmisch. The lift system is being modernised as Garmisch is hosting the 2011 Winter Olympics. This area is generally less expensive than the resorts of Austria or Switzerland. The scenery is beautiful, and Garmisch Partenkirchen is a bustling town and makes a good centre.
It's easy to reach Germany using the European motorway network. From the Channel ports head for Stuttgart then Munich, from where it's an easy hour's drive to the resorts. If you live in the North of the UK save the drive to Dover and cross from Newcastle to Ijmuiden near Amsterdam or from Hull to Rotterdam in Holland. From Rotterdam and Ijmuiden (Amsterdam) you might like to travel via Cologne (Koln), Frankfurt and Nurenberg to Munich.
