Belgium is a small country and ideally suited to a driving holiday. The coastal resorts on the North Sea Coast offer excellent sandy beaches and good opportunities for walking and cycling. Then there are the Belgian cities, with some of the best preserved old towns in Europe. Most famous is beautiful Bruges, with its canals, stunning town hall and squares, seen at its best around Christmas when the whole town is alight with decorations. But Antwerp deserves a visit, with its elegant old merchant houses and jewellery district. Ghent also rewards a visit, and Brussels, the capital, is one of the liveliest and most sophisticated cities in Europe, with excellent restaurants, first class shops and a lively cultural scene.

If you're looking for something more rural, then the Ardennes hills and forests in the south-east of the country are a haven of tranquillity. There are plenty of trails for both walkers and cyclists, and the rivers that flow through the area, notably the Meuse, offer boat trips and kayaking.

So however you get to Belgium, once there the best way to enjoy the country is by car. More tourist information on Belgium.
