Chambéry is often called the Gateway to the Alps. It is the last
large town before the ski resorts, and sits at the junctions of the A41 and A43
Autoroutes, the two main motorways to the mountains. From here you can head via
Grenoble to the resorts of the Southern Alps, via Annecy to the North Western Alps
or via Albertville to Aime, Tignes and the Isere valley.
But Chambéry is worth a visit in itself. The central town is a mixture
of modern and old, and the main shopping area is pedestrianised. There are plenty
of hotels to break your journey, and a good number of restaurants. The country around
Chambéry is also very beautiful, with easy access to lakes and hills where walking
and other outdoor activities abound.
There is a small airport and at the time of writing Jet2, Flybe
and British Airways fly there from the UK. The airport enjoys the distinction of
bing the closest to the most Alpine resorts, so if you fly, it is the ideal place
for hiring a car.
